In August, Cavendish Square teamed up with the World Design Capital 2014 campaign, and against the backdrop of the WDC2014 theme “TODAY FOR TOMORROW – sustainable solutions for people and planet”, created inspiring sustainability stories throughout the centre, focusing on the extensive green practices in place at centre.

The quirky “Made by You & Cavendish” recycle bin monsters launched in the centre in August too and their mission was to transform the centres waste into designer product and shoppers had to “feed” the monsters paper, plastic, tin and glass waste!

Focusing on the WDC2014 theme “TODAY FOR TOMORROW – sustainable solutions for people and planet”, Cavendish Square partnered with local green designers, Pitchulik, WREN, NEWCO and Give It Bag. The waste produced and recycled in the centre by our shoppers over the past three months was crafted into beautifully designed, functional and desirable recycled products. Through this initiative, titled ‘Made By You & Cavendish Square’ (MBY&C), the centre’s shopping community in fact contributes to the creation of the products by the designers.

The recycled products will be available at the Made by You & Cavendish Recycle Pop-Up Store ,created specifically for this project. The pop – up store will be operational for the month of October and will be located in Col’Cacchio court on the Lower Ground Floor, operating from 10am – 5pm daily.

The SACSC Footprint Marketing Awards recognise exceptional shopping centre marketing, innovation and creative achievements, with economic success.

Cavendish Square stole the show by earning the popular Spectrum Award for marketing excellence for ‘The Exchange’, an initiative for the Organ Donor Foundation of SA. The Exchange was the world’s first pop-up fashion boutique at which money was not accepted, but fashion from SA’s top designers was exchanged by registering as an organ donor.

“The Exchange” project was selected from all the Gold Footprint Marketing winners as the overall winner in recognition of overall excellence in the industry.

Cavendish Square won 5 of the 12 Gold Footprint Marketing Awards which was awarded to Primedia Lifestyle, for its marketing campaigns.

In addition to The Spectrum Award, Cavendish Square’s The Exchange won a gold in the advertising category, it also received two gold awards for its Taste of Winter in the sales promotion and events category as well as the public relations category, its advertising of Guilt & Ganache intrigued judges, and the ‘Introducing New Tenants’ campaign won in the leasing support category.

This year’s winners were judged to a global standard and can stand proud with top shopping campaigns worldwide. Exciting news is that for the first time this year, all SACSC Footprint Award Gold winners are automatically entered into the International Council of Shopping Centres’ Solal Awards. This global awards campaign is set to be judged in March/April 2015.

Cavendish Square Launches #cavendishcares

August 2014

Cavendish Square was awarded the 2013 City of Cape Town, SAPOA & ESKOM Energy Efficiency Forum Award in the single building category, for its progressive initiatives in creating an energy efficient, sustainable shopping centre.

Initiatives for the centre included renewable energy solutions, saving waste to landfill, energy saving initiatives and even an on-site worm farm.

“The World Design Capital 2014 provided the ideal backdrop for Cavendish Square to create awareness and educate the public on the centre’s extensive greening initiatives by showcasing these in an interesting and innovative manner”, says Brenda Bibby, Centre Manager of Cavendish Square.

Focusing on the WDC2014 theme “TODAY FOR TOMORROW – sustainable solutions for people and planet”, the centre is utilizing the waste produced at Cavendish Square by turning it into beautifully designed, functional and desirable recycled products that will amplify visibility of the centre’s sustainable outlook.

Cavendish Square have partnered with local green designers to create sustainable products, thereby closing the gap between waste produced by shoppers and tenants, so that products that are manufactured in the end, have been created by the Cavendish Square community. In October the Made By You & Cavendish Square designers will reveal their sustainable product at the recycle pop-up store that will be positioned in Cavendish Squares’ centre court from 1 – 31 October 2014.

The #cavendishcares campaign aims to educate the public of the centre’s energy and sustainability initiatives, by creating awareness throughout the centre. Installations of fun recycle bin characters and informative decals will be placed in the shopping centre.

Cavendish Square will also be a platform for World Design Capital sustainability projects such as BlendaVenda , Shakti Energy and 100 Bicycles to showcase and exhibit their projects in the centre, every month for a week.

“In raising awareness to the public about World Design Capital: Cape Town 2014 we specifically looked at spaces where we could reach diverse groups of people in Cape Town and it was established that shopping centres would assist us in reaching this goal. And, we are truly delighted that Cavendish Square would host us”, says Melene Rossouw, Special Projects Manager for WDC2014.

Cavendish Square supports World Design Capital and sustainable living #cavendishcares.

Former Marketing Manager, Marianne Norton, developed the idea in 1999; "When we came up with the idea of a Charity Book Sale in 1999, it was a promotion blessed by the gods. Everything seemed to fall into place so smoothly. It immediately established itself as a win-for-all promotion" said Norton.

Bev Whelehan, the charity convenor, who has been driving the book sale for 15 years, believes that the event has become detrimental to the plight of the many charities involved.

"It has now become the main fundraiser of the majority of the participating charities." said Whelehan.

Last year, the charities managed to raise R428 360, and the hope is that they are able to exceed this amount at the 2013 Charity Book Sale.

Encouraging the public to visit the sale, Cavendish Square's Marketing Manager, Tanja Gerber said "we urge the public to support this annual fundraising event. The act of browsing and purchasing books of all genres, while making a difference in the lives of others, proves to be a great family outing".

Cinema Nouveau A FURTHER NOTE REGARDING THE CLOSURE OF CINEMA NOUVEAU

A note to all who have commented on the closure of the Cinema Nouveau complex. It was proposed to Ster Kinekor that a Cinema Nouveau offering be housed in the main SK complex at Cavendish Square. Ster Kinekor did not think this was commercially viable, but perhaps their management could be urged to reconsider the proposal by those who are disappointed by this decision.

valentines STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF CAVENDISH SQUARE

Cavendish Square confirms that a major retailer will take over the space occupied by the Cinema Nouveau complex. The decision by the mall co-owners not to renew the lease with Ster Kinekor was prompted by a demand to add this retail offering to the Cavendish Square mix. It is expected the new retailer will be trading from the second half of the year after configuring the space and fitting out.

The co-owners’ priority is to deliver an offering that meets consumer requirements in a pleasant and safe environment. Where appropriate, the co-owners will seek to improve that offering and build customer traffic that also supports the contribution of the 250 other retailers in Cavendish Square. This regular attention to the tenant mix is illustrated by the opening of six new stores within Cavendish Square in the last three months.

The consumer demand for an addition to the retail offering was confirmed by independent research undertaken in May, June and July 2012. This research was the latest in a regular series and involved interviews with shoppers leaving Cavendish Square and telephonic interviews with residents in the Cavendish Square catchment area.

The research findings followed a second extension – for another year – of the lease for the Cinema Nouveau complex. These extensions were aimed at affording the lessee an opportunity to build traffic that would benefit its operation and ultimately the centre as a whole. The visitor numbers reported to centre management by the lessee show a consistent decline from 2009 and are below the numbers for cinema complexes elsewhere.

A proposal on behalf of the co-owners that the Cinema Nouveau offering be accommodated within the Ster Kinekor complex on the upper levels of the centre was not regarded as commercially viable by Ster Kinekor.

How to find a baby reindeer:

1.Our shoppers can download the free Augmented Reality Reindeer App for iPhone, iPad or an Android device here: bit.ly/cavendishreindeer via your mobile web browser.

2.Use the app to observe clues to detect the specific markings on the floors throughout the centre where the reindeer has been wandering off.

3.Keep snooping until you've discovered Baby Reindeer's whereabouts. For identification purposes, snap a picture of him and produce it to an elf at the Adoption Centre.

4.Once you've solved the strayed reindeer case, we will gratefully issue you with an official Adoption Certificate to take your well-deserved reindeer home.

5.Now, share the fun with your friends and invite them to play along.

6.Thinking of blending in? Use the app to play reindeer dress-up by applying reindeer antlers, a nose and ears to an image of yourself and easily share with social media sites via the app.

Kids, listen carefully to this inside info! For those using our first-of-its-kind Augmented App, Cavendish Square has a SURPISE SPIN on its traditional 'Photos with Santa' this year. Don't miss out!
